Philippine ironwoods (genus Xanthostemon), with five known species, are characterized to have exceptionally hard and high-density wood. However, these species are currently in the list of threatened group of forest tree species in the Philippines (Philippine Red List DAO 2017-11 and International Union for the Conservation of Nature). Its population reduction is majorly caused by overexploitation. Hence, their conservation is fundamental to the sustainable and productive management of the forest ecosystem in which they occur.
