Project Completion Report on Forestry Sector Projects

The Forestry Sector Project is a 10-year nationwide project funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) under the 18 the Japanese Yen Credit Package. It aimed at addressing the root causes of forest degradation poverty and insecurity of land tenure. The FSP adopted the Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) as its main strategy of implementation in pursuing the twin goals of rehabilitating the environment alongside the empowerment of beneficiary communities and upgrading of their living status. The Lianga-San Agustin Mangrove Rehabilitation Subproject is considered as an important habitat to a variety of flora and fauna that are ecologically and economically important to the surrounding communities. The subproject is located within coastal barangays of the municipalities of Lianga and San Agustin, Surigao del Sur. The subproject covers three (3) barangays namely: Liatemco and St. Christine of municipality of Lianga and Brgy. Britania of San Agustin municipality.

As early as 1997, Deputized Environment and Natural Resources Officers (DENROS), more popularly known as Bantay Gubat Volunteers, have been identified and organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to help in conservation efforts along the area of Mt. Poras in Sibalom, Antique in accordance with Department Administrative Order Number 41 series of 1997 of the DENR. Due to lack of financial and technical resources, however, the Bantay Gubat Volunteers were not properly guided and monitored.
