Conservation of Priority Protected Areas Project (CPPAP)

The project objectives were to protect ten areas of high biodiversity value, improve the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) protected area (PA) management capabilities; incorporate local communities and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) into the PA management structure; confirm the tenure of indigenous cultural communities and long established residents of PAs; establish a permanent funding mechanism for PA management and development; and develop sustainable forms of livelihood consistent with biodiversity protection. The positive achievements on the ground of the project’s first three components – protected areas, biodiversity conservation and tenurial security – merit emphasizing. The DENR referred to these components and some of their impacts, including: established and operating PA Management Boards, increased awareness and capacities in biodiversity monitoring, established Integrated Protected Areas Funds, and awarding of Protected Area Community Based Resource Management Agreements.
