The BAT & BEP Project, which was implemented from April 2015 to June 2022 with funding support from the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, aimed to create resource-efficient waste management systems to reduce the release of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) from open burning activities. One of the interventions of the project is the upgrading of the Plastic Recycling Facility (PRF) in Barangay Paraiso, Koronadal City.
Apart from the armchair molds provided by the project, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of LGU Koronadal City developed its own innovative mold design. Measuring 1 x 2 x 1.2 meters, this plastic lumber mold offers greater efficiency and versatility, enabling the production of a wider range of furniture items, including chairs, benches, garbage bin containers, and fences. This innovation has allowed the LGU to diversify the facility's outputs and enhance its functionality.
The facility currently processes two (2) tons of plastic per day, producing 150 to 200 pieces of plastic lumber. A notable milestone achieved by the facility was the production of 65 picket fences, spanning 75 meters in length, which were installed in front of the City Hall on November 4, 2024. This initiative successfully diverts approximately 8,600 kilograms of plastic waste, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability.
The LGU is in the process of procuring additional molds of various dimensions to further expand and transform recyclables into more functional and practical products. Currently, products processed at the facility are being donated by the LGU to schools and barangays.
