The Establishing Knowledge on the International Importance of Sibugay Wetlands: A Means to Enhance Wise Use of the Proposed Ramsar Site Project aimed to conduct a comprehensive assessment and research initiative to establish the international significance of the Sibugay Wetlands. The scope of the project encompasses various activities aimed at gathering critical data, evaluating the wetland’s ecological importance, and preparing a strong case for its recognition as a Ramsar site.
Beyond Ramsar site status, this project seeked to promote the wise use of the Sibugay Wetlands. It is intended to serve as a model for sustainable wetland management, showcasing how wetlands can be preserved while supporting local livelihoods and enhancing biodiversity.
A notable innovation introduced by the project was the establishment of a Local Government Unit (LGU)-constructed Mangrove Ecopark, which served multiple purposes, playing a pivotal role in both wetland conservation and local tourism development.
The ecopark incorporated extensive mangrove reforestation efforts, aimed at restoring and preserving the fragile mangrove ecosystems within the wetland. Education and interpretive facilities were also created within the ecopark, including informative signage, guided nature trails, and visitor centers, designed to raise awareness about the significance of wetlands, mangroves, and their ecological importance. By offering guided tours and educational programs, the ecopark attracted both local and international tourists. The ecopark also allowed visitors to observe the rich biodiversity of the wetland, including various bird species, aquatic life, and unique flora, contributing to ongoing research and monitoring efforts. Aside from this, it also created a sustainable source of revenue for the local community, as it provided them with employment opportunities, such as tour guides and maintenance staff, and encouraged their active participation in the preservation of the wetland.
With the project’s multi-faceted approach, it demonstrated how conservation efforts can align with broader goals of sustainable development and environmental awareness. The project not only contributed to the success of wetland conservation and management but also promoted community engagement, education, tourism, and economic development in the area.
