International Coral Reef Initiative: regional workshop for East Asia report (Cebu, Philippines, April 2-4, 2001)

International Coral Reef Initiative. Regional Workshop for East Asia. (2001).International Coral Reef Initiative. Regional Workshop for East Asia. Report, 2-4 April, 2001.

The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) is a partnership among nations and organizations seeking to implement Chapter 17 of Agenda 21, and other international Conventions and agreements for the benefit of coral reefs and related ecosystems. The ICRI partnership's approach thus far has been to mobilize governments and a wide range of other stakeholders in an effort to improve management practices, increase capacity and political support, and share information on the health of these ecosystems.
In June 1995, a Call to Action and a Framework for Action for achieving sustainable management of coral reefs and related ecosystems was developed at the first ICRI Planning Workshop, which the Philippines hosted. In this workshop, participating nations and organizations agreed that their partnership with ICRI would be based on the endorsement of the Call to Action, progress in implementing the Framework for Action, the development of national coral reef initiatives or provision of relevant assistance to other nations developing initiatives, and promotion of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN).
As part of this process, a series of regional workshops were planned to define action plans based upon regional and national priorities for management, capacity building, research and monitoring related to the conservation and sustainable use of coral reefs and related environments.
This Report summarizes the major outputs of the ICRI Workshop for the East Asia
Region.
·     The ICRI Regional Status Report
·       The ICRI Regional Policy Agenda for East Asia, and
·     Specific Country Action Agenda signifying each country's Commitment to Action
The GOAL of the workshop was for ICRI member-nations and organizations in East Asia to adopt the ICRI Policy Agenda and work for its implementation. Its purpose was to produce a Regional Policy Agenda for East Asia and specific Country Action Agenda to be adopted and implemented by regional governments and organizations.
Co-sponsored by the Governments of the Philippines and Sweden and Japan, the United States Agency for International Development, United Nations Environment Program, the East Asia workshop was held in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan Island, Cebu Province, Philippines from April 2 to 4, 2001. Eighty-five participants from 19 countries (in addition to the nine East Asia ICRI member-countries, Kenya, Australia, France, Germany, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, United Kingdom and United States were also represented) attended the workshop.
Initially, participants took stock of the progress made within countries in East Asia in support to ICRI, in promoting coral reef conservation and management in the context of ICRI objectives. Reviewing Mini-case Studies, they then identified and analyzed trends, issues and opportunities related to the three priority themes identified that affect or could affect coral reef management in East Asia.
