Subproject Completion Report: STAGBAK Mangrove Rehabilitation Subproject

The STAGBAK Mangrove Subproject covers Barangays Sta. Lourdes, Tagburos, Bacungan and Kamuning, all on the southeast border of Palawan and involves a total of 1,861.28 hectares. Rehabilitation of these areas had to be initiated to arrest its deteriorating condition brought about land conversion activities in some portions. Add to this the fact that Palawan, renowned as the last frontier, has one of the most picturesque sceneries in the country and therefore has a significant role in tourism.

The Subproject also envisioned making the community members selfsufficient especially after the issuance of the Community-Based Forest Management area totaling 1641.77 hectares. This was pursued through trainings on project and financial management and more specific ones on livelihood projects such as fish and seaweeds processing; mud crab culture among others as well as employment in Subproject and livelihood activities to raise their income.

In terms of infrastructure support, the drying yard, wharf and causeway are all useful to the community especially in the transport of fishery products for commercial purposes. They are indeed complementary to the livelihood projects established.
