Subproject Completion Report: Lapinig Mangrove Rehabilitation Subproject

The Lapinig Island Mangrove Rehabilitation Subproject is located in the northeastern part of Bohol Province and covers a total land area of 1,033.2 hectares of open mudflats, secondary growth mangrove (sparse forest), and second growth mangrove under full-stocked forest. Rehabilitation of mangrove forest had been deemed important in view of its ecological impact as well as the socio-economic advantages that would redound to the communities.

The President Carlos P. Garcia United Women Multipurpose Cooperative Inc., (PCPGUWMPC), the People’s Organization that undertook the Comprehensive Site Development activities in the amount of PHP4.95 million was able to accomplish the targeted 550 hectares and in the process provided employment in the coastal communities through activities like propagules collection, planting and removal of debris and also in the protection and maintenance of the plantations.

The Subproject generated an estimated employment of 20,000 man days increasing the annual average income of coastal households to PHP42,000 during Project implementation from PHP32,612 at the time of the appraisal. The financial benefits are still expected to go higher with the long-term effect of the fully-rehabilitated mangrove forest when fish catch would have greatly improved.

More importantly, the Subproject was able to change the mindset of the coastal communities through conduct of seminars and trainings and intensive information, education and communication on the benefits of protecting the mangrove forest. From rampant mangrove destruction and conversion into fishponds, the people have learned to appreciate its environmental impact and socio-economic benefits.
