Subproject Completion Report: Kabingaan Mangrove Rehabilitation Subproject

Kabingaan Mangrove Subproject is composed of two parcels within Barangays of Aloh and Tangkapaan , Kabingaan Island, Tapul, Sulu. Sulu province is considered among one the poorest province in terms of income level of their constituents despite the vast natural resources that abound in the area.

The People's Organization rehabilitated a total of 950.1 hectares of mangrove forest plantations through reforestation and enrichment planting with the overall weighted average survival rate of 88.08%.

With the continuous assistance from the DENR, several technical assistances through training/seminars were given to the PO to prepare and further capacitate them to perform a more challenging role of being “manager” of the 4,527.4 hectares forestland by virtue of the issued Community-based Forest Management Agreement (CBFMA).

During the PO’s two years existence, they were able to generate enough funds for their livelihood activities such as buy and sell of dried fish, sea weeds farming, micro lending and gasoline retailing.

The project has provided regular employment to its members in the performance of its plantation and maintenance activities apart from the assistance from their livelihood projects. The latest socio-institutional survey revealed that the average household annual income of the community who were formerly dependent on sea weed farming and fishing activities increased
