The Integrated Persistent Organic Pollutants (IPOPs) Management Project was implemented to assist the country in minimizing the risk of human and environmental exposure to POPs by strengthening the regulatory and monitoring framework, improving capacity for and providing demonstrations of safe management of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), reducing releases of unintentionally produced POPs, and reducing exposure to POPs in contaminated sites.
The BAT & BEP Project, which was implemented from April 2015 to June 2022 with funding support from the Global Environment Facility and United Nations Industrial Development Organization, aimed to create resource-efficient waste management systems in order to reduce the release of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) from open burning activities. One of the interventions of the project is the establishment of the Central Materials Recovery Facility (CMRF) in Brgy. Sinawal, General Santos City.
The Biodiversity Assessment and Monitoring System (BAMS) and Socio-Economic Assessment and Monitoring System (SEAMS) are among the priority activities in all legislated and proclaimed areas in the Philippines. BAMS serves as a tool for scientific assessment of the current status of biodiversity, habitat quality and certain ecosystem services. Further, it is utilized to establish a baseline for long-term monitoring and management, determining trends in ecosystem and species abundance and diversity, as well as identifying threats and stressors.
Citizen Science - a method of engaging the public in the conduct of scientific research or data collection and analysis - has been implemented in an array of research for well over a century now (Rudy, 2021). However, its application in the water sciences is relatively recent and is growing (Njue et al., 2019; Zheng et al., 2018).
